And to clarify further, the Nunc Dimittis is also called the “Song of Simeon”— Simeon was a man who was promised by God that he would see the Savior before his death, and 40 days after Jesus’ birth, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, where they met Simeon, thus fulfilling the prophecy. The text of the Nunc Dimittis is the prayer Simeon is traditionally believed to have said when he held Jesus.
